* UPPER KALIGANDAKI TREK: DEC,19 - 28/2010

UPPER KALIGANDAKI 7 DAY TREK:

My friend Andrees de Ruiter & I left for Upper Kaligandaki trek on 19/12/2010, early morning flight by Tara Airline. It was very pleasant flight to Jomsom then same day we walked via Phalyak & Dhakarzung beautiful village (still in this area has remained the custom of Polyandry). There are not yet the proper tourist lodge & restaurants but that’s good thing to have chance to be mixed with the kind, friendly & generous people in their kitchen eat together, sitting around with Tibetan tea, while cooking, and you can sleep in their guest rooms.
Unfortunately, the lack of time we had to make Kagbeni and sleep over night at new Annapurna Lodge.

Wow, next day we made a visit to Tiri village the most beautiful place including gompas, farming terraced fields & Tibetan styled clay roofed houses.
We got chance to see the Am chi (the Tibetan traditional medicine doctor who got training for 9 years in Darjeeling). He offered us cup of tea and gave us full of enjoyment by playing three stringed violin! He is very expert for it.
Tiri village is part of Upper Mustang but till there the Tourism Government of Nepal has allowed as day hike trip, you should get back to Kagbeni to sleep. You’ll get very good “Daal Bhat” if you asked the lady of the big building next to the public drinking water tape.

After Kagbeni we made another wonderful hike up to Zhong village via Putak, at Zhong there are 3 lodges (two private and one is at gompa on the top of village with great view). From Zhong you can make horse riding trip to the view point above the village, from where you can see the beautiful valley of Upper Mustang & Lower Mustang. For detail you can contact at the hotel of Zhong as well.

We continued next to Jharkot via Chhyankur village, Muktinath-Ranipauwa, also was great. At Jharkot we stayed at Plaza Annapurna Lodge. Jharkot is very beautiful, one thing Andrees & I did new thing, which we got an opportunity to enter into the old private gompa, where no one (tourist) went into it yet. Inside you can see very old kitchen gears, altar & things used by monks, paintings etc. There are several rooms; most of them haven’t opened yet.
Around Jharkot or Muktinath-Ranipauwa you can make beautiful round day trip (Purang, Chhyankur, Zhong, Putak, Muktinath temple etc..).

Then hiked to old Jomsom via the fabulous, picturesque Lupra pass 3940m, then we ascended to Lupra gaon, which is very beautiful, there is only a Bompo monastery of this valley painted mostly in blue color. At late evening we reached to old jomsom, stayed at Jimihendrix, which is nice lodge at the Shore of Kali River. Exactly from where you can start the alternative trekking trail along the left or east bank of the river, via Thini the Thakali village, Dhumba lake & village and Marpha. In Marpha you can visit the monasteries, get into the beautiful village, have delicious food items made by apple.

Further we walked along the left bank of Kaligandaki to Kalopani. Between if you’ve extra days many beautiful side trip such as (Tukuche, Kobang, Larjung & upper Larjung close to Dhaulagiri, or Dhaulagiri Ice fall, Kunjo village & Titi Lake etc..).

After Kalopani we took a walk to Ghasa, from where we again branched to the left side of the Kaligandaki via Pairo-thapla – Kopchepani, then we ascended about 30 meters to the left top, dropped to Ghadpar and we crossed a suspension bridge over Kaligandaki known as the deepest gorge in the World, entered into the Dana beautiful village, we stayed at a nice local house with friendly beautiful family. In the morning we visit upper Dana village with my friend Andrees, for both of us was first time and it was so wonderful Magar village with many kind of flowers and fruit garden including full of delicious organic fresh orange!

Next day to get to Totopani (hotspring) we still continued along the left bank of river, finally we reached to Tatopani, slept over night and as a last day of our trekking trip, we drove by bus to Beni, got another bus to Pokhara. If we had extra days we could continue up to Ghorepani Poon hill as well.
